The three main types of ŠKODA Motability adaptations are accessibility, driving and stowage. We’ll work with you to help decide which adaptations you need, and which car they’ll work with.
Wheelchair users have plenty of choices when it comes to their Motability car, as you don’t always have to get a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV). Instead, it may make sense to fit your car with an accessibility adaptation to your ŠKODA car. Some can even be transferred between your current car to your next Motability model.
Transfer plates typically fit the side of the car seat to help wheelchair users in and out of the car. And once you’re in or out of your seat, the transfer plate folds away. This will require upper body strength. Or you can get an electric transfer plate to make it easier.
Another handy addition for wheelchair users is an electric person hoist. These are ideal if you or a loved one need help to get in and out of the car, with a hoist lifting you into the cabin. A canvas sling is used to position the wheelchair user before moving them into place. The whole setup can be dismantled easily and stored in the boot, with the sling being the only part that stays in place.
Please talk to one of our ŠKODA Motability specialists to check if your chosen car can handle an electric person hoist, as not all ŠKODA models are compatible. Get in touch to discuss your options.
Swivel seats are another adaptation that makes getting in and out easier. They tilt, move in and out of the car and raise or lower, with manual and powered versions available. You might need help storing your wheelchair in the boot if you can’t do so.
Wheelchair swivel seats connect directly to the base of a wheelchair. This type cannot be operated independently, as you need someone to help you to assemble the base.
Choose from a range of driving adaptations that make all aspects of driving easier. Some are just attachments whilst others rework the whole setup. ŠKODA driving adaptations help with accelerating, braking, steering and signalling. Keep in mind that most of these adaptations are only compatible with automatic gearboxes, so get in touch with one of our ŠKODA Motability experts to learn more.
Instead of using your feet for acceleration and braking, you can use hand controls like a push/pull device instead. You use your hands to control your ŠKODA Motability car - pushing to accelerate and pulling to brake. Other types are available, but the basic system is the same. Hand controls require an automatic transmission too.
Steering wheel aids are perfect for those who have difficulty using the steering wheel. Something like a steering wheel ball gives you greater command of the wheel.
If you struggle to use controls like windscreen wipers, headlights and indicators, a remote control device can give you a hand. These are mounted controls that can be used with a single hand, making driving safer and easier.
Electronic accelerators are available if you can’t operate push/pull hand controls. These are easy to use trigger or ring setups that can be pushed or pulled, depending on what you need.
If you can’t use the standard right accelerator, left foot pedals are available. Floor-mounted units fence off the original accelerator, whilst twin-flip setups allow the original pedal to be folded back out for a nominated driver.
If you can’t reach the pedals, you can get pedal modifications for your ŠKODA. Extending pedals makes driving easier and more comfortable.
Stowage adaptations make your life easier by lifting and storing your wheelchair or scooter. This can be quite a laborious task, so having some extra assistance is always handy. And most stowage adaptations can even be transferred between ŠKODA Motability cars.
For storing your wheelchair or scooter in your boot. Car boot hoists securely store compatible mobility aids, with certain hoists needing more room. Bring your wheelchair or scooter to your local ŠKODA dealership so our Motability experts can advise on the best choice.
You can keep your boot space free with a rooftop stowage for a manual wheelchair. Fold the wheelchair down then place it in an electric hoist which then lifts and stores it in the roof box. This can be fitted to either side of the car.
Need a wheelchair when you’re out and about? You can add a lightweight manual wheelchair inside your car so you don’t have to bring yours with you. They fold away easily and are stored out of the way.
